Maruti Suzuki Gypsy expert review

CarDekho Experts
The Gypsy is meant to be taken off-road, and offers tremendous potential for modifications as well.

Overview

While modern cars are packed to the brim with technology, here’s a vehicle that’s as analogue as cars get. Maruti Suzuki’s first SUV, went on sale back in 1985. Over the years it has seen its share of nip and tucks to stay in tune with the times, but the recipe hasn’t changed a whole lot. A light-weight body, a peppy petrol motor and four-wheel drive - this concoction made the Gypsy a darling of the Armed Forces for the past few decades. But, should you buy one?

Overview

Verdict

The Maruti Gypsy has stood the test of time, becoming an icon in the process. It isn’t something you buy to get to work, or buy the groceries in. In fact, it misses out on the most basic creature comforts you’d find even in the Alto 800.

The Gypsy is meant to be taken off-road, and offers tremendous potential for modifications as well. In case you need a toy to muck about in over the weekends, the grand daddy of four-wheel drive SUVs in India tugs at the heart more than anything!

Pros & Cons of Maruti Gypsy

Things We Like

  • Healthy 210mm of ground clearance, light weight and four-wheel drive gives it fantastic off-road credentials.
  • Smooth and refined 1.3-litre petrol motor has a punchy mid-range.

Things We Don't Like

  • On road ride quality is slightly bumpy, thanks to the leaf spring suspension.
  • Bare bones cabin doesn’t feature basic necessities such as AC or power windows.

    A BID GOODBYE
Great SUV, it has the best offroad ability at such a cheap price but the interior could be a little better. Overall it's a great package and its time in 2019 to say a bid goodbye to this car as it soon going to be discontinued in Maruti showrooms.

    A Bid Goodbye
It's the best SUV for offroading and gets higher road performance due to its ground clearance but due to safety norms, it is soon going to be discontinued which would be a problem for many owners and at last love it.

    Superdependable, Indestructible!
It is the best off-roader available in India right now. First impression is that it is expensive to own and run for what it offers. The petrol engine is not economical at all, expect 8-9 km/l in the city and about 13 on the highway. It does not have the goodies that the basic entry level hatchbacks offer- no power steering, no power windows, no air conditioner. If you buy the soft top it is a pain to find a safe place to park the car. The suspension is 'bail gadi' suspension. The rear occupants will continuously keep cursing you how much ever carefully you may drive. But then if you consider what it offers, it starts to make sense for a guy like me who wants it for a bit of fun at Goa. The lack of creature comfort features start becoming an advantage- if an equipment is not fitted, it can never break! Uncomfortable it may be but you can seat 8 persons in reasonable comfort and (short!) trips like this one can be great fun. Open the soft top and it becomes a car that everyone wants to get a ride in. Now other benefits- It is very well built. Gear box is superb. Very quiet petrol engine. 4x4 capability is the best in India. Superb ground clearance- if the obstacle is less that 8 inches, you don't even have to look at it just go over. Broken roads, no roads, fields, small waterbodies, beaches, rocks, you cab just take it anywhere! Nothing breaks! Nobody messes around with you as Gypsies are mostly used by police and military. Service is very cheap- around 2k per six months. Summing it up, if you need a second car, Gypsy can be a lot of fun.

    Standard Indian Vehicle
Gypsy is a standard and popular vehicle in terms of youngsters choice but compared to other 4×4 vehicles mileage probably less and performance is apt for INDIANS.

Maruti Gypsy latest updates

Latest update: The Gypsy has now been discontinued, read the details here.

The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy had been on sale in India for more than 30 years. It was available in two versions: soft top and hard top. The Gypsy soft top was priced at Rs 6.21 lakh, while the hard top retailed for Rs 6.36 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom Delhi). The Maruti Gypsy didn’t come with any sort of creature comforts like a power steering, power windows or even air conditioning and there are no safety features as well. However, despite the Gypsy’s age and lack of features, the Maruti Gypsy continues to enjoy a cult status in the country and still makes for an ideal rally car thanks to its sub-1 tonne kerb weight and 4x4 drivetrain.
