General Motors India has recently inaugurated its LNG facility at the premises of Halol plant. This facility will supply gas to its car manufacturing plant. A tripartite agreement has now to be signed between Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), GMI and INOX India Limited. This agreement will be signed for the re-gasification, supply and final delivery of LNG at the Halol plant of the company in Gujarat.

Under this tripartite agreement, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited will have to supply the LNG. The INOX will approve and look after the cargo handling services which will include the transportation and loading of LNG from Dahej Terminal of Petronet LNG Limited to the site of General Motors. INOX will also do the task of unloading the gas in the storage tanks.

Since its inception in 1996, Halol plant of General Motors has been using LPG in applications including the paint shop. But after the beginning of this facility in July, General Motors has been using LNG for the tasks like paint baking, process fluid heating and air conditioning. It is also used in cooking at the canteen of the plant. In comparison of LPG, LNG is much safer and cleaner because it produces reduced carbon emissions. It is also cost effective and offers energy security. The LNG facility follows advanced safety procedures which includes global tools, for example, Hazop or Hazard operability processes.
