Skoda Auto, a subsidiary of Germany based leading car maker Volkswagen, is speculated to mark its debut in the small car segment with the launch of its Skoda Joyster (hatchback) in the Indian market. The car is expected to fall in the price range of Rs 3 to 4 lakh and will possibly be powered with a 1.2L, three-cylinder diesel engine. If launched in the Indian market, Skoda Joyster will be competing with some of the best-selling and most popular cars in the Indian market including Maruti Alto, Maruti Wagon R, Hyundai Santro Xing, and upcoming 800 CC car from Hyundai.

At present, Skoda Fabia is the only car from Skoda India in the volume driven segment of the country. The Fabia model is not performing up to the expectations of the company despite the continuously rising demand in the compact-hatchback segment. By launching the Skoda Joyster in the Indian market, Skoda hopes to grab a significant chunk of market share in the small car segment which currently accounts for more than 60 percent of the total passenger car sales in the Indian market.

Mr Thomas Kuehl, Director Sales & Marketing, Skoda India, recently said in a statement given to reporters that, all this while, the company has been in the high level of the lifestyle. People like its cars, it needs to be a little more affordable. Moreover, the company is also gearing up for the launch of its much awaited premium SUV Skoda Yeti in the Indian market by the last quarter of this year. The Yeti  is basically a Five-door SUV, which will be powered with a 2.0L diesel engine and is expected to carry a price tag of Rs 10 to 14 lakh.
