What is the latest update on the Kia Carens?

The Kia Carens Gravity edition, based on the lower-spec Premium (O) trim, has been launched in India. Prices range from Rs 12.10 lakh to Rs 14 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India). The Gravity Edition brings in some new design elements and features to the Premium (O)’s offering, including a dashcam and a single-pane sunroof. The Kia Carens is also slated for a refresh in 2025.

How much is the Carens' price?

Kia has priced this MPV from Rs 10.52 lakh to Rs 19.94 lakh. Prices for the 1.5-litre petrol start at Rs 10.52 lakh, while the 1.5-litre diesel starts at Rs 12.67 lakh. The 1.5-litre turbo-petrol prices start at Rs 12.56 lakh.

What features does the Carens get?

Key features of the Kia Carens include dual 10.25-inch screens (one for the touchscreen infotainment system and another for the digital instrument cluster), a 10.1-inch rear-seat entertainment system, an air purifier, a 64-colour ambient lighting setup, a single-pane sunroof, ventilated front seats, and electric one-touch folding second-row seats.

How spacious is it?

The Kia Carens offers ample space, comfortably seating two adults even in the last row. Depending on the variant, the Carens is available either as a 7-seater with a bench in the middle or as a 6-seater with individual captain seats in the middle. The seats are well-designed with good headroom and reclining backrests but users who are large in size may find the seats to be small. Entry is easy with the large rear door and tumble-forward seats. The boot provides 216 litres of space, expandable when seats are folded.

What engine and transmission options are available?

The Kia Carens offers three engine options:

  • A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (115 PS/144 Nm) mated exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission.

  • A 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine (160 PS/253 Nm) paired with either a 6-speed iMT or a 7-speed DCT gearbox.

  • A 1.5-litre diesel engine (116 PS/250 Nm) mated with either a 6-speed manual, 6-speed iMT or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

How safe is the Carens?

The Kia Carens' safety kit includes six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), front and rear parking sensors, and a dual-camera dashcam. Earlier, this MPV was tested in Global NCAP and had scored a 3-star crash safety rating in the tests.

How many colour options are there? 

Kia offers the Carens in eight monotone colour options: Imperial Blue, Xclusive Matte Graphite, Sparkling Silver, Intense Red, Glacier White Pearl, Clear White, Gravity Grey, and Aurora Black Pearl.

On our first drive, we tested the 1.4-litre turbo-petrol and 1.5-litre turbo-diesel with the 7-speed DCT and 6-speed torque-converter automatics, respectively.

Both engines offer good performance with the focus being on smoothness and ease of use. We experienced both engines in stop/go traffic and out on the highway at triple digit speeds and were never left wanting for punch. While you can manage daily commutes and overtakes with ease, what’s good is that this behaviour doesn’t change much even with a full passenger load. Sure, overtakes may need a bit more planning at highway speeds when the car’s loaded up but you don’t need to push too hard to find the speed you need.

Performance

Interestingly enough, with the Alcazar, we prefer the diesel engine as it feels more capable, especially with a full house on board. In the Carens, it’s the petrol we’d lean towards. Not only does it offer superior refinement, it’s also more eager to pick up speed with the added benefit of the more responsive automatic transmission. Notably, compared to the Seltos or Creta with the same engine, the throttle response is a little less urgent and more measured, in the interest of passenger comfort.
